Whipping up cakes, cookies, whole wheat bread, cream - can’t really do it without the help of a mixer. While a stand mixer will do the job and much more, hand mixers are usually more affordable and take up less space, which is a very important factor to take in consideration if you have a small kitchen.
Whether you need to pull it out for a quick job, such as whipping cream or sugar and butter - or you need to use it throughout the cooking or baking process - a hand mixer is a must-have tool in every kitchen.
There are so many brands and models of hand mixers that you start feeling overwhelmed just by thinking about which one to choose. So we asked over 50 experts the following question:
If you needed to buy a hand mixer, which one would you choose?

I haven’t had a hand mixer for a long time, but ours was a mainstay of the kitchen when I was a kid (and my brother and I always, always got to lick the beaters- as long as there wasn’t any raw egg in there!).
I’m personally a fan of multi-function tools and kitchen appliances, so I use my KitchenAid stand mixer and my Cuisinart immersion blender for all of my mixing and blending needs. But if I were to purchase a hand mixer today, I’d probably go with the KitchenAid 9-Speed- it comes in a few different colors, it’s lightweight, and it even includes dough hooks!

I’d choose a Hamilton Beach hand mixer all over again. I’ve had one for 10+ years now and it is a workhorse! Even though I have a stand mixer (a KitchenAid), too, sitting on my counter 100% of the time, inevitably I reach for my hand mixer located in the cupboard behind closed doors. It’s lightweight, easy to use, has several beaters including a whisk and comes with a handy storage tub for the beaters in which the hand mixer rests, making it easy to store. Love its convenience and flexibility!

I love the KitchenAid hand mixer. The array of colors and aesthetic design of the kitchen aid mixer appeals to me. If I were to buy another hand mixer it would be a kitchen aid hand mixer. I say ‘ if I were to buy another hand mixer’ because I have a proctor Silex hand mixer which i honestly didn’t think would perform as well as it has for the past 2 years. I bought it for about 10 bucks as an emergency and I have bought it as a gift for a couple of friends who are also enjoying it.
In as much as I love kitchen aid mixers ( I have the Kitchen aid stand mixer and food processor) and would recommend a KitchenAid anytime because of their efficiency and aesthetics I can’t help but mention that the proctor silex is a good hand mixer as well it does the work beautifully.
Chef Eric Jacques Crowley is a seasoned, professional chef and the founder, owner and chief instructor at his dynamic culinary school, Chef Eric’s Culinary Classroom, where he has shaped the careers of many professional chefs.
I would choose the Cuisinart because I like the affordability and reliability. We use it at home all the time and love it. When my students ask for a recommendation for a hand mixer, I always recommend Cuisinart.

My hand mixer is a 47 year old Philips model which was one of my parents’ wedding presents. If I was replacing it I’d look for one with a slow start, at least 3 speeds and with beaters, dough hooks and a whisk. It doesn’t have to be an expensive one unless you are using it multiple times a day. My cooking is all about fuss free simple healthy recipes and a basic hand mixer does the job for me!

I really love my Kitchenaid
An Aussie girl who loves to create American-inspired recipes. A foodie at heart, Jessica loves to travel and taste test along the way. She is particularly fond of the USA and gets much of her baking inspiration from their expansive culinary culture.
I would go with the Kitchen Aid hand mixer. I can’t live without my stand mixer, so I know Kitchen Aid make great kitchen products. Their hand mixer also comes with different attachments which is very handy for a variety of recipes - not just baking.
A foodie and her pups exploring international flavours & ingredients – bringing you classic recipes with a twist!
If i had to buy a hand mixer, I would buy the Breville Handy Mix Scraper Hand Mixer. I use a lot of glass and metal bowls when I cook and I like that the beaters have a rubber cover around it so it doesn’t scrape up against the metal, glass or ceramic!
I also love the way it has a storage box compartment as well so that I can keep the mixers and cord tucked together with the mixer when I’m not using it which means I never have to lose my beaters again! Makes for a easy way to store it as well.
Julie is a chef, dietitian & food media expert – and most importantly, a Midwestern girl – who is on a mission to make healthy eating sexy and craveable!
I love having a hand mixer to use when baking. I don’t think any specific brand is better than the next - I use Cuisinart, but other brands such as Kitchenaid, Hamilton Beach, and other well-known kitchen brands work perfectly!
They make baking activities, such as whipping egg whites or cream cheese, really simple and quick. If you don’t have room in your kitchen or don’t have a budget for a large stand mixer, a hand mixer does the job!

KitchenAid. There is a model that comes with several attachments so it’s almost like using my large counter top model.
Kathryn is the owner of Cardamom and Tea, a blog inspired by Assyrian food. While some of the traditional dishes you’ll find on her blog are specific to Assyrian cuisine, many of them are shared by lots of different cultures, nations and all religions all over the Middle East and the world.
If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can totally make do with a hand mixer. On the flip side, if you do have a stand mixer, you probably won’t ever need a hand mixer, unless you ever need to beat something over a double boiler.
So I usually recommend getting just one, and hand mixers are a perfect choice if you’re on a budget, short on space, and don’t mind kneading dough by hand every once in a while.
I’m a big fan of the Kitchen Aid 5 speed model. It’s powerful and has a nice variety of speeds, which is good when you want to gradually increase the speed, as with meringue—but anything over 5 gradations is kind of unnecessary.
I’ve never used a hand mixer that couldn’t get the job done, but there are some that are more annoying to use than others. I once used a hand mixer with a speed control lever that went from 0 to 7, but just below 0 was a special setting where it would jump right to the highest possible speed.
So for example: you’re mixing some meringue on high speed, and you dial it back down to turn it off, but just when you think the beaters are off, you accidentally toggle past 0, and the hand beaters suddenly jump back up to the highest speed, spraying egg whites everywhere. Keep it simple and you won’t be disappointed.

I’m actually in the market for a new hand mixer and I’ve got my eye on the KitchenAid. I think they make the best electric mixers.
Mely Martinez is a former Mexican school teacher, home cook, and food blogger. She moved to the United States about ten years ago, after living in Mexico her whole life. Now she loves to share home-style recipes for authentic Mexican food.
Without a doubt, it will be the KitchenAid 5-speed handheld mixer. It’s powerful but quiet, very lightweight, and also the versatility of the speeds, it goes very low when you need it a the lower speed and super-high on the 5-speed level. Very convenient small appliance to have handy in your kitchen.

My old Braun, which they stopped making. I loved that the blade was so close to the bottom of the bowl it make making mayo super fast and easy.

Even though nowadays I usually use a stand mixer, if I had to chose a hand mixer, I’d go with any from Kitchen Aid. My stand mixer and all other kitchen gadgets are from them and I couldn’t recommend it enough. Great quality.
Samantha is a lucky wife and a proud mother. She loves cooking, writing, eating queso, watching college football and taking way too many pics of her kids. In her spare time, she runs her food blog FiveHeartHome and also wrote a cookbook.
I tend to gravitate towards tried-and-true kitchen brands that I’ve come to trust over the years, for both performance and reliability. My beloved stand mixer (that I’ve had since college!) is a KitchenAid, so if I were to buy a hand mixer, I’d probably consider a KitchenAid hand mixer first. That being said, Cuisinart is another brand that I trust.
Sophia is the owner of Veggies Don’t Bite and she loves cooking with plants. She creates plant-based, gluten-free recipes to spread the word that healthy can be delicious and stress free for your whole family.

Swayam belives that food is memories. In fact, almost all her posts revolve around dinner stories. Her blog is for anyone who’s looking for delicious yet easy recipes that won’t take forever to make or cost a fortune.
If I had to choose a hand mixer I would certainly go with kitchenaid for the simple reason that I have used it and it’s brilliant. It’s sturdy, doesn’t heat up as quickly as many others and whips up ingredients perfectly. It’s also easy on the pocket and comes in delightful shades.
Tracy loves making her own natural products like soaps and lotions and her own pantry items like yogurt and salad dressings. Her goal is to show you how to make those things too and why you’d want to.
I’ve actually been on the lookout for a new hand mixer. I had a stand mixer that was combined with a blender and food processor, but the food processor broke, and I ended up buying a new powerful food processor that doesn’t have a mixer incorporated.
Because I use hand mixers for more than just making frosting or pizza dough, and also use them for making lotion and other homemade beauty products, I’d need a hand mixer that works well at a variety of speeds.
I’d also want it to have a variety of attachments like dough hooks, whisks, and a blender rod. While I haven’t personally tried it out yet, the Kitchen-Aid 9-speed digital display hand blender looks like it would be a good fit for me. While it’s on the more expensive side compared to other hand mixers, it has the versatility that I need, it’s attractive, efficient, and has good reviews.
